The Christmas Tree: Real or Fake?

Apparently there is an ongoing dilemma with Christmas trees. The question is do you cut a real tree every year or put an artificial one up? As long as I can remember I’ve had a real evergreen tree. I remember plodding through the snow for the perfect shaped tree. I can still smell and hear the chainsaw cutting it down.

I’m an old-fashioned kind of girl from New England, favoring those steadfast traditions of exploring for a tree and smelling the rich woodsy scent everyday.  The spiky or soft needles brushing against you as you trim the tree gives me goosebumps.

 

I can understand why people choose artificial trees for it’s less of a mess and probably easier. You buy it once and that’s your total investment as real trees cost money every year. My dad and stepmom keep it decorated and put it away as it is.

Which do you favor…real or fake?

  3. We had real trees growing up until my brother brought home a monster and wrecked my mom’s brand new paint job. It was artificial from then on. I got to pick a real tree with my brother today though:)

  4. We have a tiny fake (metal) tree we’ve used for the past two years. We didn’t buy it for re-use, but somehow … it seemed right, when last year rolled around. We’ll be using it again this year, but potentially swapping out a pair of earrings I used to replace lost baubles with genuine ornaments.

  6. I like a real. There are people who come down to the city to sell trees…..I figure it’s their livelihood, at least partially. So, I like supporting them. Secondly, I live in a small apartment with limited storage space. I just don’t have room to store a tree

  7. We had a real tree for a long time and then went to artificial. Decorating the tree is the fun part for me now as my tree is full of only gingerbread ornaments, some with many memories and that’s what it is all about – your own memories and traditions.

  8. My in-laws do the same thing Mary– wrap up the tree and stow it in the garage ready for next year!! And I’m a little jealous of your walking in the woods for a really fresh tree!! We head to Home Depot for a not really fresh tree– but I still love love it. Once is completely covered with all our Christmas debris, it’s beautiful!!     1. Hi Rhonda, putting the tree away like that is convenient! I bet your tree is beautiful regardless of where you got it! I’ve been busy baking for fundraisers and co- workers. Today after school I baked pumpkin frosted cookies and chocolate thumbprints. I think I’ll do a post on it soon. Are you near the fire in Ca? I hope not! I’ve been praying for them all!       1. Hi Mary– Chocolate thumbprint cookies sound perfect! I baked 10 little loaves of cranberry bread to take to my MOPS (mothers of preschoolers) this morning– we had our end of the semester Christmas breakfast– so fun! And we are not near the fires, but our kid’s live in Ojai that was in the middle of the huge Thomas fire. Damage to their home and buildings burned down at Micah’s school. So sad and so much to do before next semester! They are living with us for now. How is weather there?? Are you going to have a white Christmas?? hugs hugs Mary!

  9. My family has an artificial tree. I adore the scent of real ones, but as it turns out, the majority of us are allergic to them! It’s no fun having a runny nose and itchy eyes for weeks at a time, so we’ll be sticking to artificial…
